Transforming Communities

Active travel is not only good for us, it also makes for better, more connected towns and cities. Walkable communities with well-designed streets, welcoming shared spaces and safe, connected cycle routes create more desirable places to live, making people healthier and happier, reducing pollution and boosting local economies.

Many clients face the challenge of doing more with less. By sharing expertise and using the latest innovative technologies, we can plan, design, evaluate and deliver smart outcomes within limited timeframes and budgets. From securing significant Cycle City funding in West Yorkshire to planning an active travel network in Dublin, we have the experience to provide successful travel solutions that change communities for the better.

Designing for today and for tomorrow, we aim to get people moving so that they relish their commute and enjoy exploring what’s around them.

Quietways London

AECOM has taken the lead in designing and delivering five Quietway schemes in the London Borough of Southwark. When constructed, Quietways will form a network of continuous and safe cycle routes along less trafficked streets, parks and open spaces, which will complement the Cycle Superhighways programme. It will connect key destinations across London with direct, safe and clearly signed routes suitable for even the newest of residents and visitors on bikes. Improved road safety for all roads users and improved accessibility also form critical elements of the programme of Quietways.

Working with Officers and Members, AECOM staff have prepared scoping studies, outline designs and detailed designs for the routes. Some highlights have included establishing templates for wayfinding design that are now used across the whole London-wide network, designing filtered permeability elements, specifying streetscape enhancements and creating safe crossings of major roads.
